Encaustic is a wax based paint, which is heated on a palette and applied to an absorbent surface. It is then reheated in order to fuse the paint. Encaustic can be polished to a final sheen, and even reworked years later by reheating. The earliest examples of encaustic are the Fayum mummy portraits from Egypt (ca. 100-300).
